Human chorionic gonadotropin ( hCG ) is a glycoprotein hormone and it contain galactose and hexosammine . hCG produced by syncytiotrophoblast of placenta during pregnancy .hCG mead up of alpha and beta subunite , alpha subuinte identical to that of LH , FSH , TSH but beta subunite is unique to hCG.

Function of hCG is to maintain corpus luteum of pregnancy . Corpus luteum produced estrogen , progesterone, relaxine which are responsible for maintenance of pregnancy 

hCG level can be measured in blood and urine . In blood it can be detected after 6 days of conception .In urine it can be detected after 14 days of conception . hCG level gradually increase and come to peak at 9- 12 week of pregnancy ( 36 -84 days of prgncy ) then level decrees .
