What is meant by internal and external respiration ?
- Internal respiration refers to the gas exchange between the cells
and their fluid medium and utilization of O2 and production of CO2
by the cells
- External respiration refers to the absorption of O2
and removal of CO2 from the body as a whole
Give the functions of the respiratory system other than gas
exchange
- Humidification and cooling / worming of inspired air –
Inspired air is saturated with water and warmed or cooled to within 20F of
body temperature by the time it reaches the alveoli
- Defense against inspired foreign matter –
Cilia and mucus secretion
of the respiratory epithelium , adenoids, tonsils and pulmonary macrophage guard
the respiratory system .
- Manufacture of surfactant for local use
- Lysis of clots in pulmonary vessels by a fibrinolytic
system.partial removal of physiologically active metabolites from the
circulation such as prostaglandins, serotonin and norphinephrine
- Synthesis and release of substance into blood such as
prostaglandins and histamine
- Activation of physiologically inactive substance in the
blood such as angiotensin I to physiologically active angiotensin I by
angiotensin converting hormone
- Phonation by the vocal chords and other intrinsic muscle of
the larynx
